FACES OF OU: Sebastian Rod

Three years ago, the three founders of Complex Labs met and found that their youth, drive, boldness, and global ambitions matched up perfectly. Being sports enthusiasts, they launched a company that sells premium nutritional supplements and is now growing at a rapid rate. As CEO, Sebastian Rod is confident that he can turn Complex into a successful global brand, and plans are underway at West Flexi Offices in Stodůlky.

“We started with a simple idea—to combine elite athletic performance and modern science into supplements that really work,” says Sebastian Rod, describing Complex Labs’ beginnings. Since all three founders had personal experience with top-level sports, they decided to primarily market their new brand to active athletes.

“From our own experience, we know what athletic performance entails, and we understand the specific needs of this target group,” explains Rod, a former junior floorball player. It was on the floorball court that he met his partner, Filip Langer, who currently plays in Sweden’s top league and for the Czech national team. Honza Tobišek, a lifestyle coach who works with athletes from the NHL, Premier League, and Bundesliga, subsequently joined the team.

“We strive to make our products completely transparent, which most brands on the market don’t do. We formulate individual supplements strictly on the basis of verified scientific studies. Instead of marketing promises, we offer our customers serious scientific arguments as to why our formulas really work,” says Rod. “I’m motivated by feedback from clients when they let us know that our joint nutrition has helped them get back to training,” he adds.

The team, which has since expanded to 12 people, has managed to maintain triple-digit year-on-year growth—last year, the company’s turnover reached tens of millions of Czech crowns. Its range of dietary supplements now also includes a line of clothing. “This year, we’d like to expand into English-speaking European markets, and within a few years, we’d like to become one of the largest brands in Europe,” Rod states about his company’s ambitious plans. “Although the dietary supplement market is relatively saturated, we believe that when someone comes along who does it better, whether in terms of branding or content, there are still opportunities to be had.”

Complex Labs selected offices in Stodůlky to base their activities in. “Unlike the city center, it’s quiet here, so we can fully concentrate on our work,” explains Rod, who lives nearby. “We appreciate the motivating modern environment, services, and the fact that the offices can grow flexibly with us. We’ll definitely be adding another office by the end of the year,” he concludes.
